Seasonal Kaiseki
at the traditional architecture

In the architecture that relocated the former Swiss Embassy,
we serve Kaiseki at the tables facing a rock garden.
For groups, we also have a banquet hall and special private rooms.

THE ORIGIN OF THE FORMER SWISS EMBASSY BUILDING

'The building of the former Swiss Embassy' was built in 1930 in Hiroo-town, Azabu, Tokyo by Bannaka Shinji as the secondary residence of the late Kondo Shigeya (the son of a member of the House of Peers), a successor of Kondo Rempei known as the founder of Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha. This building, which is a pure Japanese-style mansion made entirely of hinoki cypress and has all rooms in the Kansai style, has been highly evaluated as authentic Japanese architecture. The design is by Shibuya Goro, who taught at Miyakojima Technical School in Osaka. Having a deep understanding of traditional architecture, his professional book 'Japanese Architecture (Nippon Kenchiku)' (co-written by Nagao Katsuma and the first edition was published in 1938) is still highly recognized today as a bible of Japanese architecture.

During the time it has been used as the Embassy of Switzerland from 1945 to 1952, the successive Swiss ambassadors deeply understood not only the beauty of this building but also its cultural property value so as not to spoil its original shape. Although this architecture was to be dismantled for a new embassy building, it was contributed to Nagara 'Furusato-mura' in November 1978 by Switzerland as a symbol of friendship between Switzerland and Japan, with a great effort of Bamnaka and Pierre Cuénoud, the Ambassador of Switzerland to Japan at that time. In 2004, it was designated as National Tangible Cultural Properties.
